War Department (T20WD/T20M WD)

Strip a T20T engine and fit the internals into a later side-points unit, then fit that into a modified T20SM Mountain Cub chassis but add strengthened non-folding footrests, a larger 1/2 x 5/16 inch chain instead of the standard 1/2 x 3/16 inch and sprockets to match, stronger control cables, crashbars and black leather panniers, and you have the T20WD (also called the T20M WD) Cub supplied to the French Army (and some other militaries).

It had the small T15 Terrier petrol tank, heavyweight front forks, double gusseting under the headstock for added strength and a mounting bracket on the right-hand rear subframe to take an optional high level exhaust. To match the bigger final drive chain, a larger chainguard was fitted with an extra locating bracket on the left side rear subframe. To finish was a small triangular toolbox under the seat, sealed bearings in the wheels, a crankcase undershield and side and centre stands.

The Energy Transfer ignited engine also had a 7:1 piston modified to take 9:1 piston rings (they had a greater radial depth), a standard camshaft but with sports valve springs in the cylinder head, large diameter needle roller bearing big end assembly and wide ration gear cluster.

The colour of all the machines as supplied to the French Army was NATO matt green. The tank badges being white lettering on a matt green and chrome backing.
